Working From Home? Here’s How To Make The Most Of It.

I have to say, we’re pretty damn lucky to be living in a time where we can work remotely from the comfort of our home.

We have an amazing office in St. Pete FL where our main staff works, but amidst the news this week, we went fully remote for the time being.

The great thing is, we’re still 100% operational, and not missing a beat.

Have you found yourself working remotely for the first time?

Here are our top tips for making the most of it:

1. Get Prepped Like Normal

While there may be a temptation to roll out of bed and right into work, you’ll feel much more productive and it will be much easier to get into your “work mode” if you get up at your normal time (or earlier!).

Take a shower, get dressed, and do your normal morning routine even if you’re just going to be sitting at the kitchen table all day long.

Sliding out of bed 5 minutes before work and eating frosted flakes over your work laptop while you say “good morning” on slack is just going to lead to low productivity and make you feel drained all day long.

2. Make A Space For Work

Having an area where you go, even if it’s just a corner of a room or a particular spot at the kitchen table, just to “work”, helps get your brain set in “work mode”.

Attempt to limit your home distractions while you’re in your work context – ie, if you’re in your work mode spot, don’t turn on the tv in the background.

After a day or two, you’ll train your brain to realize that when you’re in that one spot, you are in work mode and you’ll be more productive.

3. Set Your Boundries

Be firm with your roommate/significant other/aggressively friendly pet that you are working and you aren’t just at home to hang out.

They are probably going to want to talk and show you every little funny thing they see online, but you’ve got to remind them that you have work to do and it’s important to save the social interaction for the times when you aren’t in your work zone (see #1).

They may be confused at first (especially if your significant other is a friendly pet) but trust me, you’ll be way more productive once you establish a boundary that you just need to stay in work mode while you’re working and shouldn’t be distracted.

4. Eliminate Distractions

If you wouldn’t watch Netflix in the background at work, don’t do it at home – every little distraction adds up to wear on your focus and your productivity, so keep them to a minimum.

Plus, remember to preserve your internet bandwidth for your work tasks – don’t waste it by having streaming video going that you aren’t watching, which just slows down your ability to communicate with coworkers and clients.

5. Take Breaks

Take breaks periodically, but don’t just get up and wander the house to get snacks and screw around.

Instead, set a timer and try to force yourself to stay at the computer for (example) 55 minutes per hour.

Take it from me, taking a whats-in-the-fridge snack break every eleventeen minutes is not ideal for your spring break bod. Resist the temptation to keep getting up from the computer.

Conclusion

This is one of the beautiful things about online marketing – even if you have to work from home, your website, SEO & PPC can still keep working for you 24/7.
