The Type of Bottle Closures

A brand should always feel completely satisfied with a product they put out. Not only is the product itself important but also the packaging. It reflects the brand itself, emphasizes the product’s best qualities, and creates an unforgettable experience for the consumer. The packaging is the foundation and gateway to not only elevate the product but also the company as a whole.
With that said, every part of the packaging is important when it comes to a product. From the receptacle it’s into the closure it has, each and every part is integral when thinking about both function and presentation for a product. The packaging must not only protect the product inside but also have a practical and reasonable way of the consumer obtaining the product. The closure alone is crucial in setting the tone of the experience for the consumer.
FH Packaging offers many different types of bottle closures compatible with our various bottles, jars, and containers. The type of closure that is needed when it comes to a product depends on a variety of factors. This includes which type of container is being used, what type of product is being packaged, and the appearance and functionality of the packaging closure. Here are 10 types of bottle closures we have here at FH Packaging.

Child Resistant Caps
Child-resistant bottle closures, also known as CRC, keep children from accessing and ingesting any potential hazardous and toxic products. These types of closures are required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA) in order to protect children 5 years old and under from poisonings and death that can occur. This special safety cap is required for packaging a number of products, including chemical and cosmetic, mouthwash, drugs and dietary supplements, liquid nicotine, pharmaceutical, industrial, and household products. These usually come in a variety of styles, such as rim-snap, squeeze-and-turn, push-and-turn, REL, and squeeze-and-pull.
-
Droppers
Droppers are bottle closures used to transport a measured volume of liquid. Hand-in-hand with pipettes, they create a vacuum above the liquid-holding chamber with a bulb or and selectively release this vacuum to draw up and dispense liquid. These are useful for controlling substances, like essential oils, aromatherapy, medicines, CBD tinctures, and dyes, and come in both plastic and glass. At FH Packaging, we even offer tamper evidence and CRC versions of the dropper.

Sprayers
Sprayer bottle closures come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Sprayers, you guessed it, are closures that spray out the liquid. There are ribbed sprayers, smooth sprayers, and trigger sprayers. Ribber sprayers offer grip for safe handling, allowing the top to be easily used and pressed with a fingertip. Smooth sprayers are all equipped with a clear plastic cap to prevent accidental dispersal and can also be easily used and pressed with a fingertip. However, the only difference is that these are smooth on the side. Both these types of sprayers are great for any liquids ranging from cosmetics to personal care products. Lastly, trigger sprayers tend to be bigger and come with an On/Off feature to prevent liquid from accidentally getting discharged. These are usually great for household and cleaning supplies.

Pumps
Pump bottle closures provide a quick and efficient way of dispensing out products. These come in a variety of styles. There are smooth treatment pumps, up-to-lock lotion pumps, down lock lotion pumps, and foamer pumps. Smooth treatment pumps are great for dispensing personal care and cosmetic products, especially serums and moisturizers. Up lock lotion pumps are able to lock by pulling up on the dispensing nozzle without needing to dispense some product, while down lock lotion pumps are able to lock by depressing and then twisting the trigger. Both of these types of pumps are perfect for, you guessed it, lotions and soaps too. Lastly, foamer pumps mix air and water to produce foam, being very popular with liquid soaps.

Flip top bottle closures are convenient and dispense products easily. All one has to do is flip it open and squeeze or dump out the product from the cap. These come with different types of openings, such as slotted openings and slit-style openings. Slotted openings are used for larger contents while slit style openings are great for products that need more precision and controlled dispensing. These are great for any personal care products like creams, lotions, shampoos, and conditioners.

Disc tops
Disc top bottle closures are convenient bottle closure because they allow for one-hand operation. Dispense the product by depressing the cap, causing it to snap up, and apply pressure to the bottle. Press the cap back down to neatly store the product. These are widely used in the personal care and pet care industry. These have a slightly wider opening, which is ideal for dispensing thicker liquid products, such as shampoos, conditions, shower gel, and lotion creams.
-
Phenolic Caps
Phenolic cap bottle closures are known to be strong, durable, and heat-resistant, making them reliable. Because of the ribbed-style finish, this allows for better grip, making it easier for the consumer to open and close the container without leakage. These are mainly used in environments that use corrosive chemicals and liquids, making it an ideal closure to handle any progressive products that contain hot temperatures and acids. Use these for aromatherapy, essential oils, or vape juice.
-
Orifice Reducers
Orifice reducer bottle closures, are usually ribbed and tamper evident, bring functionality and reliability to a container. They are easily pressed into bottle openings to make an even smaller opening to allow for controlled dispensing. These caps are great for dispensing many types of products such as inks, dyes, and essential oils.
-
Smooth and Ribbed Caps
Smooth and ribbed bottle closure caps are regular caps that are paired with a foam liner, providing an airtight seal. A smooth cap gives a simple and aesthetically pleasing finish, while the ribbed design allows for better grip. These are usually used on various jars, which can be used for many balms, waxes, lotions, creams, supplements, and artisan coffees and teas.
-
Twisted Dispensing Caps
Last but not least, there are twisted dispensing caps. These bottle closures are great for direct and controlled dispensing and take preventative measures against leaks. In order to dispense the product, turn the top ribbed nozzle counterclockwise, exposing the top orifice. Then apply pressure to the bottle it’s in for distribution. These are great for dispensing sauces, glues, paints, cosmetics, and other liquids and viscous fluids.
