Sergio Cabanas, A Divorce Attorney & Certified Mediator, Appears On Univisión To Shed Light On Domestic Violence
The South Florida lawyer, founder of Divorce & Mediation Law Firm | Cabanas Law Firm, was featured on the major Spanish media network Univision to raise awareness of domestic violence and offer hope to victims.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, June 3, 2024 — Sergio Cabanas is the managing attorney and founder of a prominent South Florida family law firm that frequently helps people who find themselves in toxic, and sometimes dangerous, family situations. He went on Univisión to discuss the prevalence of domestic violence, the hardships victims face, and to tell victims what they can do to protect themselves and their children!
Reporter Jany González of Univisión interviewed him and Karina Gómez, the founder of the Designers & Creative Teams Against Domestic Violence organization, which has currently served over 500 women in Florida who have been victimized by domestic violence. Karina was once a victim as well; a fashion designer and immigrant, she suffered verbal aggression, psychological torment, and physical abuse at the hands of her husband (who also abused their son).
She and her husband moved from Venezuela to the United States because she had a work permit. Her husband didn’t want to get divorced because he was waiting on his green card; however, upon arrival in Florida, she decided to report her husband to the authorities.
Divorce lawyer Cabanas states that he agrees with her decision. For any domestic violence claim in Florida made, he shared, the police must come and conduct an investigation; this means that the victims get protection. If the officers do not arrest the perpetrator, and there are no charges filed by the state, victims can still take private legal action by filing a restraining order (which is only strengthened by a police report).
There are also other legal resources which may be available to victims under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Attorney Cabanas explained how both women and men, and both citizens and non-citizens, can find protection under VAWA. When victims of domestic violence are immigrants, like Karina was, or are not in a marital relationship, they still have legal protection.
Fear of deportation, losing status, judgment, or retaliation by the abusive partner are the reasons many people, particularly women, do not come forward with the abuse early or at all. However, this can be a tragic mistake; according to the American Psychological Association, every single day in the United States over 3 women are killed by their partner or ex-partner. That is why it is imperative that you recognize the warning signs as early as possible, so you can take action.
If you are experiencing domestic violence, do not be afraid, and do not wait. Your safety, and your future, are worth fighting for!
