What is a retirement community?

It is no secret that Myrtle Beach, SC is one of the best places in the country to retire to, and there are many retirement communities that are ideal for those looking for a neighborhood with adults sharing similar interests and settling into their next chapter in life.

What is a retirement community you ask? A retirement community is typically defined as a housing complex or residential community that is specifically designed for older adults. Many (but not all) communities are age-qualified or age-restricted, typically age 55+, and offer many shared services and/or amenities for residents to enjoy. Over the past decade or so, we have seen many new retirement communities pop up around the Myrtle Beach area that has incredible floor plans, stunning finishes and provide a lifestyle that many retirees crave. Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live in one of these communities? If not, or if you simply have questions on retirement communities, you are in the right place. In this blog post, we want to give you all the information surrounding retirement communities in Myrtle Beach in hopes to shed some light on if they may be a good fit for you. We hope you enjoy!

What are the benefits of living in a retirement community?

There are many benefits that come with living in a retirement community in Myrtle Beach, one of them being a strong sense of community. While many typical stand-alone residential neighborhoods also offer this in Myrtle Beach, there is something to be said about the community feel and bond among residents in a retirement neighborhood. You are surrounded by residents that most likely are similar in age and are also enjoying their next chapter in life. You are surrounded by friends to socialize with, to do activities with and to bond with.  Another benefit is that many of the community’s feature “maintenance-free living,” which is great for residents who don’t want to worry about lawn care and other upkeep around their property and common areas.

There is also the added benefit of safety and security to take into consideration with retirement communities. Some of the neighborhoods are secluded, which ensures that only residents and approved guests are admitted on the property. Other security features of the community may include well-lit sidewalks, common areas, streets, parking lots and common walkways, as well as clearly marked exit doors in the amenity areas.

What do homes within retirement communities look like?

While the size and design of the homes vary based on the builder and communities they are located within, many of the homes within retirement communities offer more livable square footage for residents to enjoy. They also typically are more affordable than other multi-level homes with open floor plans and offer increased energy efficiency. You will also typically see all the amenities of the community located on one floor, so residents will not have to worry about traveling up and downstairs to use and enjoy them. Many homes will also feature wider doorways and accessible bathroom features.

If I live out of state, why should I look at retirement communities in Myrtle Beach?

Where do we even start with this one? Now we may be biased, but Myrtle Beach is one of the best places in the country to spend your retirement years. Not only does Myrtle Beach have some of the most stunning stretches of beaches in the world, but retirees will discover a world filled with topnotch shopping and dining destinations, championship golf courses for the avid golfers and (maybe the most desirable attribute) the incredible weather that Myrtle Beach, SC is famous for. With temperate and mild temperatures, residents of Myrtle Beach enjoy (and are spoiled with) an abundance of sunshine and mild winters.

Another very attractive quality for retirees is how affordable South Carolina is compared to other destinations in the country, with the cost of living being below the national average. With a combination of low property, sales and income tax rates, Myrtle Beach is a perfect place for retirees who are looking to get the most of their hard-earned savings and enjoy the next phase of their life!
