How to Record Vocals: Hit the Right Notes With These 5 Tips for Quality Vocal Recordings

Recording audio at home can seem overwhelming. But, with the right tips, your recording will be nice and smooth.

1. Have the Right Equipment

First, you’ll want to make sure your setup is on point. To record high-quality vocals, you need high-quality equipment. And, you need to make sure you’re not missing anything important. 

Create a checklist of the different audio equipment you need to invest in. If you need help making sure you have everything you need, look into your options when it comes to choosing studio recording equipment.

2. Know Your Position

The way your microphone is positioned in relation to your mouth plays a big role in the quality of the audio that’s recorded.

The right position may also differ depending on the type of microphone. Some microphones will require you to keep your mouth as close to the microphone as possible.  You may have to have the microphone pointed in a specific direction, or angled in a particular way.

And, usually, the quality of your audio recording will improve if you’re standing up while you record, rather than sitting down or laying back. Try out different positions that are comfortable and result in a good-quality recording.

3. Keep the Right Environment

In order to have the best quality audio recording, you’ll want to be able to isolate the audio. So, keep the room you record in as quiet as you possibly can. Refrain from recording when there’s a lot of commotion happening outside, such as construction or children yelling.

You’ll also need to make sure the room you record in is set up for optimal sound recording. Hang up blankets on the wall to help absorb sound, or invest in acoustic foam for an even better experience. You can use carpets on the floor for the same purpose.

4. Use Software

There are different types of software and plugins you can use to improve the quality of your audio recording. These can change the compression of your recording, and add delays or reverbs as needed. You can experiment with lots of different types of effects until you find out what works best for your audio recording needs.

5. Know Your Voice

Whether you’re recording your own voice or someone else’s, it’s important to keep that voice in tip-top shape. Make sure you don’t strain your voice. Use different vocal exercises to keep your instrument on point.

Listen back to your recordings to see if there are ways you can improve the quality of your audio recordings. Different effects in post-production are better suited to different types of voices, depending on your pitch, the tone of your voice, and other factors.
