How is Infertility Defined?
This is a difficult question to answer. The World Health Organization has described three different approaches to defining infertility.
Clinical Definition
Infertility involves a disease process in the reproductive system. A diagnosis of infertility isn’t made until after 12 months of failed conception.
During this time, the couple must have had regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. At this point, testing of the partners may begin to determine possible causes.
Demographic Definition
Failure to become and maintain a pregnancy after five years among those 15 to 49 years of age. The couple must have a consistent union status without contraceptives and have an ongoing desire for pregnancy. The woman must also not be breastfeeding during this time.
Epidemiological definition
Women between the ages of 15 and 49 who report unsuccessful achievement of pregnancy after two or more years. She must be sexually active without contraception. She may also not breastfeed during this time.
Understanding Panchamahabhutas
Pancha mahabhutas describes nature’s five primary elements. Ayurveda follows the belief that these basic elements are present in the universe. The five elements are Akasa (space/ether), Vayu (air), Thejus (fire), ap (water), and Prithvi (earth).
People and nature are one. There is no separation. There is a connection between the whole universe and the universe within you.
The panchamahabhutas encompasses our body, mind, and everything around us.
The body is composed and supported by doshas, dhatus, and malas. Dhatus comprises the major physical aspects of the body. This includes the cells, tissues, organs, bones, membranes, sheath, fats, and skin.
The dhatus may be normal or abnormal. The Prasanna rupa is the normal form. Mala rupa describes the abnormal form.
Mala rupa acts as a toxin causing the body to respond negatively. Shukra refers to the tissues of the reproductive system. If this takes an abnormal form, then becoming pregnant may be a problem.
Causes of Infertility
Ayurveda teaches that the last tissues created in the body were the reproductive tissues or Shukra dhatu. The health of the reproductive system depends on a specific series of transformations. When all steps occur properly, these tissues become refined and balanced.
Several problems can interrupt this process. These include poor nourishment, toxins, and anything that interferes with a step in the process.
For example, fertility problems may arise when impurities build up. This may be due to:
- An unhealthy diet
- Digestive problems
- Inconsistent lifestyle
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Spicy and salty food
- Other environmental factors
When this occurs, steps must be taken to remove impurities and re-establish the normal steps of the reproductive process.
What Is Ayurvedic Treatment for Infertility?
When using an Ayurvedic approach to infertility, the body is viewed holistically. It’s not separated into parts. Your Ayurvedic practitioner will ask many questions to guide the diagnostic process.
Treatment begins when the doctor determines what is interfering with the fertility process. The intervention focuses on reestablishing the proper transformation of food into nutrients. Thus, the nutrients can then move to the Shukra dhatu.
Infertility treatments include:
Panchakarma
Before you can produce healthy sperm and eggs, it’s important that you balance the doshas. Panchakarma detoxifies your body to achieve this balance.
Pathya apathya sevana must be observed by both partners. Neither should drink alcohol, smoke, eat unhealthy foods or participate in toxic activities.
Becoming physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy before conceiving increases your baby’s health.
Banyan Tree Bark
The practitioner may prescribe a powder created from dried banyan tree bark. This powder is mixed with sugar. You should take about 17 to 18 gams every morning for two months.
Ashwagandha Churna And Kapikacchu
These medications are prescribed for the male partner. They help increase sperm count and quality. You should take this with milk each day.
Phala Gritam
Female partners may have Phala Gritam prescribed for infertility. You mix the medicated ghee, a liquefied butter, with milk and drink it in the morning. This works to treat the functional, not structural damages associated with infertility.
Guduchi, Gokshura, And Triphala Churna
These medications remove blockages in the body that interfere with the production of Shukra dhatu.
Shatavari
Women may have Shatavari prescribed to treat their infertility. This is Asparagus Racemosus, a tonic that you drink.
Ayurveda Diet Recommendations
Nutrition plays a large role in Ayurveda infertility treatment. Adhering to diet recommendations can help resolve problems with infertility. You should avoid spicy and extra salty foods.
The following is a list of food choices to include in your diet:
- Almonds
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Whole grains
- Milk and other dairy products
- Dried fruits
Each of these foods helps to nourish the Shukra dhatu. Thus, this diet can enhance your fertility.
