Passport DC
If you want to see as much of the world as possible without leaving DC, the best time to do that is in May. During the entire month of May, Cultural Tourism DC celebrates the world by encouraging embassies to host various events throughout this month.
Over 70 embassies participate every year and there are hundreds of individual events including exhibitions, street festivals, and live performances. Events are designed for a variety of ages so you can find one that suits your needs.
Be sure to start looking into what’s available as early as possible so you’ll have time to decide what you want to go to. While many of these events are open to the public, others require purchasing tickets in advance.
Let’s take a closer look at just three of the events that you can participate in during the annual Passport DC celebration.
Around the World Embassy Tour
Around 50 of the embassies in the Northwest quadrant of Washington DC participate in the World Embassy Tour every year. Nepal, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Kenya are just a few of the embassies you can check out during this event.
You can visit whichever ones you’re interested in throughout the day and learn more about that country and their culture through song, dance, and food. Each embassy will have something different to offer visitors.
Although many are within walking distance of each other, there’s also a complimentary shuttle service that can take you to your next stop on the tour.
Shortcut to Europe
Similar to the Around the World Embassy Tour, this event is restricted only to the European countries. However, with such diverse cultures packed into such a small area of the earth, there’s sure to be something interesting to learn.
This event is also what kicks off Europe Month, a month-long celebration of the countries located on the continent of Europe. There are 29 participating embassies and a number of events between them during this event.
If you’re interested in any of the many European cultures, this is a way to immerse yourself in their cultures and learn what they’re like, even if you don’t have a passport.
Asian Heritage Festival
Held on the streets, the Asian Heritage Festival is hosted to celebrate the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. There, you can see things like Filipino hip hop dancing, Tibetan folk music, and Muay Thai kickboxing performances.
There are also a number of interactive lessons where you can learn various dances such as hula, belly dancing, and bamboo dance. You can also watch the live talent search known as Fiesta Asia Emerging Stars Contest for kids.
National Holiday Celebrations
In addition to these large events in which numerous countries come together to put on, there are also holidays celebrated by individual countries who create events and invite others to join them.
Bastille Day
Every year on July 14th, the French celebrate Bastille Day. This is the anniversary of the Storming of Bastille, a battle that ended up being the turning point in the French Revolutionary War.
Now, citizens of France continue to celebrate this day, often with fireworks and parades. In Washington DC, the French Embassy puts on an event that focuses on a different aspect of French culture every year.
It’s a great opportunity to try French food and wine, enjoy live music, and participate in a silent auction to raise money for charity.
ANZAC Day
The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) Day is celebrated every year on April 25th. The Australian and New Zealand embassies come together to plan a few events on this day, two of which are open to the public.
These events include a Dawn Service and a Commemorative Church Service. Each of these is held at a different location, so be sure to check for more information on where they’re being hosted this year if you want to attend.
ANZAC Day acknowledges the sacrifices servicemen in both of these countries have made and celebrates their commitment to peace and national security.
International Day of Yoga
If you love cool ways to exercise or are a fan of yoga, you may want to participate in the International Day of Yoga hosted by the Indian Embassy.
This event has been celebrated on June 16th for the last few years and numerous people have turned out with their yoga mats to participate on the lawn in front of the Washington Monument.
Even if you don’t regularly participate in yoga, this is a great opportunity to learn a bit more about India and its culture.
