BC Hydro Solar and Battery Rebates Explained
BC Hydro solar rebates are available for the first time. How can you take advantage of them to keep your power expenses and environmental footprint as low as possible?
In this blog, Ready Solar Inc’s solar panel installation specialists walk you through the details, explaining the BC Solar Initiative, how the BC Hydro Self-Generation Program works, who’s eligible for this rebate, and when to expect payment.
Read on for more information about accessing up to $10,000 for homeowners and up to $50,000 for businesses who follow eligibility criteria and install solar panels and battery storage systems.
What Is the BC Solar Initiative?
The BC Solar Initiative is part of our province’s strategy to transition toward clean energy. It emphasizes expanding solar power and battery storage use throughout British Columbia and provides a range of programs and incentives to encourage the installation of solar energy systems in residential and commercial settings.
What Is the BC Hydro Self-Generation Program?
BC Hydro’s Self-Generation program, formerly known as its Net-Metering program, empowers homeowners and businesses to harness renewable energy sources and reduce their reliance on the grid. Participants can generate their own electricity by installing approved systems like solar panels and battery storage. Any excess power a property produces is fed back into the grid, earning credits that offset future electricity costs.
This program promotes sustainability and provides financial incentives, making it an attractive option when you’re seeking energy independence and cost savings. Over time, you’ll reduce your carbon footprint, increase your property value, and potentially achieve energy self-sufficiency.
To participate, you must own your panels and battery storage system with an aggregate nameplate capacity maximum of 100 kilowatts. Your system must be connected to BC Hydro’s power distribution grid and use clean or renewable resources as outlined in the Clean Energy Act.
Who’s Eligible for The BC Hydro Credit?
To qualify for the BC Hydro credit for solar panel and battery storage installation, you must be a BC Hydro customer who has submitted a self-generation application on or after May 1, 2024. Your solar panel system must be installed after June 27, 2024, to be eligible for the solar panel rebate. If you’re only interested in a battery storage rebate without solar panels, your application must be submitted on or after July 23, 2024.
Other eligibility criteria include meeting specific requirements for your property, installation, and the type of solar panels and battery storage system you choose:
Property Specifications
If you own or lease a property connected to the power grid, your property meets the eligibility criteria for BC Hydro’s solar panel and battery storage credit.
Solar Panel and Battery Installation Requirements
Your system must meet specific installation requirements to meet all BC Hydro’s requirements so you can access your rebate. It’s essential to work with a certified local contractor who understands BC Hydro’s requirements and can help you apply for and secure the permits you need to begin your installation.
Your contractor will help you design and implement a clean energy system that’s just right for your property’s size and typical electricity demands. Your solar panel installer will also ensure your system is safe, up-to-code, and efficient. Since BC Hydro expects detailed documentation, it’s worth it to take your time and choose a solar panel company with a solid track record of successful commercial and residential renewable energy infrastructure installation.
What Are the Installation Documentation Requirements?
You’ll need to complete your rebate application in two stages. Before purchasing and installing solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems, you must submit your application to BC Hydro so they can complete a technical review and grant your project installation acceptance.
After your installation (and within the next 18 months of your project’s completion), you’ll need to submit all final project documentation to BC Hydro for a project inspection review and then their approval.
BC Hydro expects eligible customers to provide the following documentation with rebate applications:
- Electrical contractor authorization and inspection certificate
- Itemized project invoice (including contracting company name, client name, installation date and address, product information, and detailed project expenses)
Complex installations may be subject to additional documentation requirements, which may include:
- Diagrams
- Site plans and photos
- Product data sheets
- Certification documents
- Commissioning reports
Eligible Solar Panel and Battery Types
Your panels and batteries should be brand new to meet BC Hydro’s solar panel and battery installation requirements. While products manufactured abroad and then sold in Canada may be eligible, products not sold in Canada don’t currently meet rebate criteria.
Note that this rebate applies to new systems only. You can’t access it to replace a previously installed solar paneling system, but you can use it to expand your new system and install additional panels.
Residential Solar Rebate
The residential solar rebate offers a rebate maximum of $5,000, with $1,000 per kilowatt of generator capacity. This rebate is capped at 50 percent of your total solar photovoltaic (PV) panel system installation costs. Battery storage rebates for up to $5,000 are available for homeowners, with $500 per kWh of battery power storage capacity.
Commercial Solar Rebate
The commercial solar rebate is available to eligible businesses. Your company can access up to $25,000 for solar panel installation at $1,000 per kilowatt of generator capacity. This rebate is capped at 50 percent of your total product installation cost and includes labour and materials.
When you consider adding a battery storage system, your business is eligible for a rebate of up to $25,000, capped at 50 percent of your battery installation expenses. The minimum storage size for eligibility is 5 kilowatt hours, and the maximum is 100 kilowatt hours.
When Will Your Solar Energy Rebate Pay Out?
BC Hydro will review your rebate application once your eligible solar panels and battery system are completely installed and you’ve paid your final installation invoice to an eligible contracting company. You must also supply BC Hydro with project documentation, which they’ll validate before paying out your rebate. Your project must pass safety and compliance inspections before rebate payments are made.
Generally, it takes around 60 days to receive payment from the date your project passes its review, but this could take longer should BC Hydro subject your project to a site verification check.
