5 Signs You Need a New HVAC System
Using an HVAC system should be pretty straightforward for most people. You set a temperature and the system keeps it that temperature year-round. Most of the time you shouldn’t even think about it.
That is until now you’ve missed a few routine maintenance points. You’ve hired an HVAC company to inspect why you can’t get the air the right temperature, or why it feels so damp inside.
Need to know if it’s only a maintenance issue or you need your HVAC contractor to install a new AC unit or heating system? Keep reading to get all the info you need!
1. It’s On But There’s No Air Movement
This is a problem that companies like Larsen HVAC know all too well. You’ve set the thermostat, the system sounds like it’s running, but you don’t feel any air. It might also be blowing, but not so well.
Airflow, or lack of it, is a major concern that has a few simple causes. Your filter may be completely blocked, your coils could be iced over, your motor could be worn out, or all three.
2. It’s Blowing The Wrong Temperature
So your system is at least blowing air, but it’s the wrong temperature. Either it’s blowing cold air when you want heat or lukewarm air when you want it cold.
This could be because of iced-over coils again or a bigger problem. Losing refrigerant in the wintertime prevents your system from sending heat where it’s needed most.
Leaking refrigerant isn’t only a health risk, it’s like a leaking radiator in a car. Sooner or later, it’s going to break something else (or already has).
3. Your HVAC System Makes Strange Sounds
An HVAC system is always going to make noise. From burning furnaces, igniters, motors, electronics, and the sound of rushing air, there’s a lot going on. You get used to the way it sounds though, so it should be easy for you to notice when something doesn’t sound quite right.
Screeching, banging, overly loud humming, or excessive clicking or rattling can all be awful signs. At best, you’ll need an igniter serviced, at worse, your whole electrical system needs a replacement, a new motor, or just a new system.
4. Bad Smells Come From the HVAC Closet
Bad smells come from allergens, mold, pet dander and more all getting caught in your filter. Although, with neglect, you might need your ducts cleaned out one by one.
The first step is replacing your filter, but if burning smells and other things just won’t go away, it’s time to bring in the cavalry.
5. Leaks and Puddles Coming From Your HVAC Unit
Leaks and puddles could be due to a thawing from iced coils and a condensate line that’s blocked. It’s important to maintain the line from time to time, but if it’s blocked you could have a flood on your hands.
Excess moisture buildup is one of the reasons for faulty electronics, water damage, molds, and more.
If you’ve cleared the line and tried all you can, the next step is putting in a whole new HVAC system.
The Five Signs Your HVAC System Is Kaput
If you have one of these signs, it’s best to see if the HVAC system can be salvaged first. You might only need to replace a furnace or an AC unit. If the system is more than 20 years old, though, you might as well throw in the towel and get a new system.
