Puppies. Puppies. Puppies everywhere.
For most of us, this is the dream. But, once you actually experience puppies everywhere, you might start to pull your hair out.
They are cute. They are small. But they often cause a lot of destruction.
Have a favorite pair of shoes? Better hide them. Like having the trash in the trash can? Not anymore.
Puppy proofing your home is essential, especially if you’re bringing home a new little dachshund puppy. These little guys pack a heck of a punch.
To prepare you, we put together a quick list of things you can do to puppy proof your home. Let’s get started.
1. Hide Everything That Isn’t Meant to Be Eaten
Like we said, if you have a favorite pair of shoes you should probably hide them. Put them in a box or on a high shelf because once your dachshund comes into your home, they are at risk.
A good rule of thumb: if you wouldn’t eat it, you should probably hide it.
Eventually the puppy phase will fade, but for now, you should hide everything in reach of these little demons. You’d be surprised what they can eat.
2. Secure Trash Cans
Puppies love to get into the trash.
First, take a look at the kitchen trashcan. This is going to be the number one trashcan that they will target. Even if you have a bigger sized trashcan, a puppy can probably figure out a way to get into it. You can find trashcans with locks on them for a fairly decent price.
Next, check out your bathroom trashcans. Dogs love the scent of their humans. The bathroom trashcan is a prime location for scents and smells. While we think it’s gross, all they smell is their beloved human.
Try to keep the bathroom trashcan inside a cabinet or find one with a good lid.
As they say, one man’s trash is another puppy’s treasure.
3. Lock up the Cleaning Products
Always lock up your cleaning products.
While it’s unlikely that your puppy will want to eat the Windex, it actually happens. And if it does happen, this can make your puppy very ill if not kill them.
A lot of people like to keep things like bleach and bathroom cleaner in low cabinets. Cabinets are OK, but they can be dangerous if you accidentally leave one open. It only takes a minute.
4. Push in Your Kitchen Chairs
You might be surprised by just how high puppies can jump. And if they can’t jump, they can probably climb.
If you’re like most of us, you probably keep things like bread, fruit, or even medicine bottles on the kitchen counter. Puppies will smell these things and try to climb their way up the table.
Always push in your chairs to avoid climbing puppy syndrome.
