There are three main strains of kratom: white, green, and red. Each strain has dozens of varieties, most of which are distinguished by where the product is grown. 100% authentic kratom comes from Southeastern Asian countries, primarily Bali, Borneo, and Malaysia.
A unique type of red kratom is known as Red Malay kratom. Grown in Malaysia’s unique soil and produced through a distinct drying process, Red Malay kratom comes with a one-of-a-kind alkaloid profile.
This post will explain how Red Malay differs from other types of kratom and how to shop for high-quality Red Malay kratom online.
Types of Kratom
Kratom is a finely ground product derived from the dried leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa plant native to Southeast Asia. It contains two active compounds: mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.
The various types of kratom differ because of when the leaves are harvested. Another distinction is the concentration of alkaloids- mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine- in each type.
Here is what you need to know about the three types of kratom strains you can find online.
White Kratom Strains
Young kratom plant leaves are green with white-ish veins running through them. These leaves are harvested, dried, and ground into a fine powder before being sold as white or white vein kratom.
The drying process used to make white kratom products is unique. The young kratom plant leaves are dried indoors and without light. UV light converts mitragynine into 7-hydroxymitragynine; this process prevents that from happening.
Green Kratom Strains
When growers leave kratom leaves on for a while longer, the veins turn green like the rest of the leaf. Once harvested, dried, and processed, this type of kratom is marketed as green or green vein strains.
The drying process is similar to that of white kratom strains. The leaves are dried indoors in an air-conditioned room that is not exposed to UV light. The end of the drying process occurs outdoors in sunlight to convert some of the mitragynine alkaloids into 7-hydroxymitragynine.
Red Kratom Strains
The veins of kratom plant leaves turn red at the end of their life cycle. That’s why this strain is known as red or red vein kratom after being harvested, dried, processed, and packaged.
Red kratom leaves are dried indoors or outdoors but always under high levels of light from the sun or a UV lamp. The drying process allows for a high volume of 7-hydroxymitragynine, which red kratom is known for.

What Is Red Malay Kratom?
Red Malay kratom is a specific strain of red or red vein kratom. It is distinct from other types of red kratom in its alkaloid profile but similar to Green Malay kratom in its origin.
How Is Red Malay Kratom Made?
Red Malay kratom is made by drying and crushing mature leaves of kratom plants grown in Malaysia. Malaysia is a unique country because it is split into two parts separated by 400 miles of South China Sea. One part is on the Malay Peninsula just north of Singapore; the other is on the island of Borneo.
Malaysian soil is tropical and rich in granite and sedimentary rock, making it ideal for growing kratom plants. The unique soil composition also gives rise to a distinct chemical makeup.
Like all red kratom strains, Red Malay kratom is rich in 7-hydroxymitragynine. But compared to kratom grown in other Southeast Asian countries, Malaysian kratom contains lower amounts of mitragynine.
The lower amounts of mitragynine come from more light used during the drying period. The leaves sit under a UV lamp or in the sun for longer to ensure virtually all of the mitragynine is converted to 7-hydroxymitragynine.
Red Malay kratom is dried for a slightly shorter time and under lower light conditions. This process allows for the retention of more mitragynine to counterbalance the high levels of 7-hydroxymitragynine.
Red vs. Green Malay Kratom
Green and Red Malay kratom both come from Malaysian Mitragyna speciosa plants. They share the same genetic makeup, differing only in when the leaves are harvested.
Red Malay kratom is produced from mature kratom plant leaves. Meanwhile, Green Malay kratom comes from kratom plant leaves in the middle of their life cycle.
The maturation process changes the volume of alkaloids present in each. For example, Red Malay kratom has a higher concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine compared to Green, which contains higher amounts of mitragynine.
What Forms Does Red Malay Kratom Come In?
Red Malay kratom comes in all the forms you’d expect from a kratom product. Raw powder is the most traditional form, but you can also find it as loose-leaf or in extracts and capsules.
How to Shop for Red Malay Kratom Online
Buying kratom online can be tricky. To help you shop smart, we’ve compiled our top tips for buying Red Malay kratom online. Check them out below to become a kratom-shopping pro!
Ask for the Lab Testing Results
The first thing you want to do is look for the product’s third-party lab testing results. Also known as a certificate of analysis (COA), these reports show that the claims on the label are supported by what’s actually in the product.
Ensure the Product Is 100% Whole Leaf Kratom
Look for terms like ‘100% pure’ or ‘100% whole leaf kratom’ on the label before purchasing a product. Low-quality kratom vendors may sell products with other substances mixed in.
Only Buy from Kratom Vendors You Trust
Finding a trustworthy kratom vendor can significantly cut back on time trying to validate a company’s claims. Browse reviews, get recommendations from friends, and avoid vendors listed under the FDA’s Import Alert 54-15.
