When shopping for a new mattress, it can be easy to be overwhelmed with statistics… and often they don’t mean much to you as the consumer. Foam density is one of the most often misunderstood statistics in the mattress industry and can often be used as a tactic to get you to buy a higher price mattress. While foam density is an important statistic, a little bit of education on the topic and you will be prepared to evaluate what all of these foam density statistics mean. In simplest terms, foam density plays an important role in the overall comfort of your mattress. Foam density is measured by weighing a cubic foot of foam. As a rule of thumb, higher foam density typically offers better support and lasts longer. A high density support core paired with lighter foams (typically gel foam and latex foam in the comfort layers) is how you get the perfect mattress as a result.

Comfort

Beware of tactics where you are upcharged for higher density foams. Industry average for foam support is 1.8lbs density or lower, and anywhere between two and four pound foam density is the sweet spot for mattress comfort. Less than two pound density and your mattress lacks support. Once you get above four pounds density, the high density of the foam causes the mattress to sleep hot and becomes uncomfortable. Balancing these two variables, we use a 2.4lbs EnergeX, 4lbs 6th generation gel foam, organic Latex and 2.4lbs density in our support core to give you optimal support through the life of your mattress.

Mattress Life

Mattress density also is a variable in the overall life of your mattress. The lower the foam density, the more quickly the foam breaks down with use and fails. Because of this, we use a higher density foam that provides lasting support, and pairs well with with the comfort layers and our lumbar support strip to give you the best possible balance between supporting your weight through the night and that “don’t want to get out of bed” feeling of a great night’s sleep.

What does it all Mean?

The most important thing when you are mattress shopping is finding a quality, comfortable bed. It’s easy to get lost in the technical details about mattress composition, foams, etc. Ultimately, if you know what is most important to you about your sleep and have done a little background research, you will find the bed meets your needs.
