Business Philanthropy Pays Off for Local Charity and Holiday Shoppers
Mikael and Karen Hansen, owners of Copenhagen Imports on South Tamiami Trail, connected with the Resurrection House many years ago through their church, appreciating it was an all-faiths organization lending a helping hand to those in need in our community. Resurrection House has been serving Sarasota’s homeless population in the heart of the Rosemary District for more than 25 years. It provides a range of services, including but not limited to showers, laundry, counseling, medical treatments, veteran’s assistance, food, and clothing.
Run by 160 dedicated volunteers, Resurrection House operates solely on the donations from individuals, foundations, and corporations. Through an annual in-store holiday promotion, the Hansens have raised $35,000 over the past six years for the organization, which they find comfort in knowing allocates 100% of those donated dollars directly to their mission. That’s a lot of warm showers and counseling sessions for some of our communities most disadvantaged—and what you call business philanthropy in action. In a time of Amazon and online shopping, it’s important to remember our local retailers and small businesses are the heartbeats of a thriving community. When we support them, it has the power to truly change lives right here in our town.
What does this mean for you? This holiday season, spend your money where it matters and keep your dollars local. If you need to shop for your home this season, help out the homeless while you’re at it!
Starting this week, Copenhagen Imports will begin its annual charity promotion in partnership with the famous Norwegian Stressless furniture brand, giving customers up to $400 off their purchase when they donate $50 to the Resurrection House.
The Stressless brand is a multi-generational legacy in Norway. It creates recliners which are endorsed by The American Chiropractic Association and considered by many to be the most comfortable and highest quality in the world. There’s a short video you can watch here to learn more about their sustainable craftsmanship. Thankfully, we don’t have to go to Norway to buy Stressless, since Copenhagen Imports is one of the largest independent importers of their chairs, loveseats, and sofas—all available, of course in a variety of sizes and finishes to suit one’s comfort level and design aesthetic. If you’re in the market for sustainably constructed, extremely comfortable and fashion-forward furniture, you have to try this!
And don’t forget to say hi to Polaris on your shopping trip! You could say she’s Copenhagen Import’s mascot. She was adopted from Southeastern Guide Dogs by the Hansens after her affinity for chasing lizards prevented her from full-fledged Guide Dog status. She’s quite content these days greeting happy shoppers and lounging in the sunlit showroom.
