Opioid Epidemic Statistics
The opioid epidemic is impacting more people from day to day. Many are dependent and abusing opioids according to stats on the opioid epidemic. The therapists at The Right Step provides an individual therapy program in TX for people recovering from opioid addiction. Below is more information on opioid epidemic statistics.
Opioid Epidemic Statistics
There are many stats on the opioid epidemic that shows the drug is a significant issue to the American public. For example, over 700,000 people have died from overdosing on drugs from 1997 to 2017. In 2017, 68% of over 70,000 deaths from drug overdose were caused by an opioid. In this same year, opioid-related deaths were six times higher than they were in 1997. Also, 130 Americans die from overdosing on opioids daily, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.
Stats on the Opioid Epidemic
According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), there have been three significant instances of deaths involving opioids. There were more opioids prescribed in the 1990s, and an increase in opioid-related deaths soon after. In 2010 there was an increase in heroin overdose-related deaths. The last wave of deaths was in 2013 when more overdose deaths with synthetic opioids occurred. These deaths involved mainly fentanyl (IMF), which is found in counterfeit pills, cocaine, and heroin.
Winning the War Against Opioids
The Center for Disease Control is doing what it can to fight against this opioid epidemic. The CDC is helping health systems and healthcare providers by using data and evidence to make wise decisions involving patient safety when prescribing opioids. The CDC is also giving state data and other resources to come up with strategies to prevent more overdoses and deaths with opioids. Lastly, working with public safety officials is also a goal of the CDC to find solutions to this opioid issue.
Hopefully, in due time, opioid epidemic statistics will go down as the CDC works with treatment centers and others fighting against this epidemic.
