The Explorer replaced the Bronco II back in 1991 and for almost thirty years has impressed car buyers. The 2019 Ford Explorer Limited continues this tradition with its impressive performance and technology packages.
Curious what the Explorer Limited has in store for you? We’ve created a complete guide to outline performance, features, and optional packages.
Exterior Features
One thing you’ll immediately notice about the Explorer is that it is more of a road ranger than an off-road adventurer.
The Limited has an impressive stance with its 20-inch wheels. They’re perfectly paired with clean and unadorned body shaping. One thing Ford got right; they didn’t try to make it faux rugged.
Interior Features
There is room for everyone in this three-row seating configuration. The two captain chairs in the rear row guarantee that even your tallest of passengers will be comfortable.
You’ll love the soft-touch feel of the interior materials. But you’ll love their solid construction and durability even more.
Cargo
Do you need to haul a lot of equipment or “stuff”? Then you’ll love the 21 cubic feet of storage space behind the third row. Need more? No problem, there’s 43.9 cubic feet behind the second row.
Then for the person who needs some serious space, there’s a maximum of 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space when you fold down all of the rear seats.
To make accessing this space easier, your Explorer comes standard with a hands-free and power liftgate.
Entertainment
All models come with a 4.2-inch voice-activated display. It also comes with basic amenities like a USB port and Bluetooth capabilities.
Be sure to check out the optional entertainment features; they are some of the best on the market. The SYNC 3 touch-screen infotainment system is one of the easiest to use according to consumer reviews. It has just the right number and size knobs and buttons.
It also comes equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This makes syncing your phone a breeze.
Rear Entertainment
If you have little ones, the rear-seat entertainment system is a must. This portable add-on comes with two 10.1 inch screens and is compatible with USB, DVD, and HDMI inputs. You can also directly connect your smartphone or laptop.
There are two external speakers on each monitor. But if you don’t want to listen to the rear entertainment, have your passengers slip on the included headsets.
Performance and Handling
You’ll be impressed with the three engine options, a 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost, 3.5L EcoBoost V6, or the 3.5L TI-VCT V6. All three models come with a 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
You can build on the already impressive handling with the optional package of hill descent control, intelligent 4WD, and terrain management system.
So what’s all of this impressive performance rolling on? 20-inch premium nickel-painted aluminum wheels.
You also have the option of upgrading your ride to the 20-inch polished aluminum wheels, or 20-inch premium painted machined aluminum wheels.
Fuel Economy
The fuel economy will vary slightly depending on which engine you choose. The 3.5L V6 will get 17 city and 24 hwy mpg. The V6 EcoBoost will get 16 city and 27 hwy mpg. The I-4 EcoBoost will get the best fuel mileage in the city at 19 city and 27 hwy mpg.
Optional Packages
There are four optional packages available for the limited. Two of which are towing packages.
Towing Packages
The Trailer tow Package- Class II requires that you buy the2.3L EcoBoost engine model. It comes standard with the 4WD drive. It isn’t available for the FWD.
The other available tow package is the Trailer Tow Package-Class III. This essential package is required if you want to tow with your explorer. It comes with a frame-mounted hitch, engine oil cooler, and four or seven-pin trailer connectors.
This package will let you haul up to 5,000 pounds. If you get the 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine, then the towing package comes standard.
Limited Luxury Package

Ford Safe and Smart Package
You won’t know you need this package until you experience it, and then you won’t know how you lived without it. It comes with rain-sensing wipers, high auto beams, lane keep system, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision warning.

Safety is important to Ford, and with that, the Explorer comes standard with several safety features. This includes traction control, safety canopy system, belt-minder, front passenger airbag, LATCH, AdvanceTrac, and the SOS post-crash alert system.
All of these features have earned the Explorer high marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration when it comes to safety testing.
